Sociometry

Sociometry is one of the methods of socio-psychology developed by the psychiatrist Jacob  Levi Moreno (1934).  He developed methods to analyse interpersonal emotive  relationships within a group.  His methods can be used to identify informal leaders, social rankings and isolated individuals.  Our downloadable sociogram software is free for personal use and allows you to store sociometric data in a database and to graphically analyse the results. You can interact with the graphical and diagrammatic output to further your study of the data and to improve the visual impact of the results.

Our free software allows you to enter, edit and store the results of a sociometric  questionnaire in the dedicated Access 97 format database (no copy of MS Access is required). Four forms of sociogram can then be generated from the data. The sociogram display screen allows you to interact - moving "nodes" about the display area to enhance the visual impact of the results. You  may print the sociograms generated in full colour to any printer connected to your computer.

For more on this subject you could start at the following URL where you will find  published a copy of "Social Networks" by John Scott. http://www.analytictech.com/mb119/tableof.htm

The Adit sociogram software is free for personal use. The latest version also acts as an ActiveX exe and can be used as a "server" to store and display data generated from your own programs and databases. You are free to try this facility out with no charge. Should you decide to continue to use the Adit Sociogram software as a server process then a license fee should be paid. This is because the use of the software in this form is deemed to be a commercial use and the program is only free for personal use. Our low cost license is not onerous or unduly restrictive.

This software was originally developed as an exercise and is proving one of our more popular program downloads If you are studying or teaching courses that include sociometry why not give it a try. If you have any comments, contributions or error reports then we will try to  incorporate any feedback we get into the program and post the results on this site.

These program are intended to run under all versions of MS Windows from Windows 95 to XP. Click here to download your copy now.

If the download file size (3.17 MB) is excessive for your link then you can obtain the software  on a CD by sending a cheque for £25.00 (UKP) to Adit Limited, Tyn Rardd, Dwyran, Anglesey,  LL61 6AJ, United Kingdom together with your name and postal address. A VAT (sales tax) invoice will be  supplied with each CD. Please contact Adit Limited for details of single user, multi-user or distributable license fees payable for the use of this software as a server.

There are no formal operating instructions for the interactive use of the software as we feel that any student  or practitioner of this subject should be able to operate the software with little difficulty - particularly after loading in the demonstration data set included in the  download. If you have any specific questions then please feel free to email us at Support@Adit.Co.Uk.

You can access instructions and sample source code for using the Adit Sociogram software as an ActiveX server process by following this link. Here the API (Application Programming Interface) is explained. You can use your own programs to assemble the data to be plotted and then use the interface (much like calling a DLL) to display the results - using the facilities of the Adit software to obtain the very best visual impact.

Data Security - the  data entered to our program is stored in an Access 97 format database called SOCIOGRM.MDB and this will be installed in the same directory as the software. Please ensure that all valuable data is backed up regularly.

You can also check out www.classroomsociometrics.com on the use of sociograms to measure classroom interactions.
